Bias in Contained AI Systems: A Deep Dive for Educators and Policymakers - SITE Interactive Online 2023

During the SITE Interactive Online 2023 Conference, I had the opportunity to present on a critical topic, "Bias in Contained AI Systems: A Deep Dive for Educators and Policymakers." The presentation aimed to unpack the complexities of bias within AI systems that operate within constrained environments, such as educational tools designed to assist teaching and learning.

I highlighted how contained AI systems, while powerful, are not immune to biases that can arise from training data, algorithm design, and deployment contexts. The discussion focused on how biases can manifest in educational settings and impact both pedagogy and policy.

Participants engaged in thoughtful conversations about the importance of developing frameworks that prioritize fairness, transparency, and inclusivity. We also explored practical steps educators and policymakers can take to identify and mitigate biases in AI systems to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students.

The presentation provided an essential platform for connecting with educators and policymakers who are eager to approach AI use in education with a lens of ethics and responsibility. The insights shared during the session will undoubtedly inform my ongoing research and advocacy for more equitable AI applications in K-12 settings.
