The Core Pillars of Contemporary Education

In our first post, we introduced you to the landscape we'll be exploring throughout this series - the intersection of concept-based learning, inquiry, skills development, and artificial intelligence. Today, we'll be diving deeper into these first three components, helping you understand their meaning, relevance, and significance in today's classrooms.

Concept-Based Learning: Thinking Beyond the Facts

Concept-based learning is a pedagogical approach that goes beyond fact recall. It encourages students to seek out patterns and concepts, helping them to connect the dots and understand the 'why' behind the 'what'. In ProLearnInt’s Erickson-Lanning Institute Certificate in the Concept-based and inquiry approach there is a focus on a 3D model of education.  Which means while facts and standards still matter, skills, and an adaptive understanding are what makes a well-rounded curriculum and student

Additionally, the rapidly evolving world necessitates the development of a broad range of skills in our students. This includes problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, collaboration, and communication skills. These skills, often referred to as '21st-century skills', are crucial for students to adapt and thrive in the face of the complexities of the modern world. Education should not only disseminate information but also prepare students for the real world, and skill development is a key part of this.

In concept-based learning, concepts become the vehicle for critical thinking and deep understanding. For example, instead of simply memorizing the dates and events of a historical era, students might explore broader themes like 'conflict', 'resolution', or 'change'. This helps them to understand and analyze different events under the lens of these themes, promoting analytical thinking and the ability to relate knowledge to different contexts as well as how big ideas and themes relate to one another.  This approach facilitates a deeper understanding of content, where students can apply and transfer knowledge to new, different contexts using various sets of skills that have been developed during the learning process.  This allows students to emerge with facts, but also skills, and deeper understanding.

Inquiry-Based Learning: Powering Curiosity and Exploration

Inquiry-based learning is another active learning approach that puts students at the helm of their learning journey. It is centered on the idea of learning by asking questions, exploring, and experimenting, promoting curiosity, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

In an inquiry-based learning environment, classrooms transform into spaces where ideas can be challenged, investigations can take place, and knowledge is constructed through curiosity and exploration. The role of teachers in this setup is to guide, mentor, and facilitate, providing students with the tools and resources to navigate their inquiries.

Skills Development: Equipping Students for the Future
